Concerned about clean healthy water?
Please complete this questionnaire to help us best represent the public interest!

1.Are you a Cook County resident?

2.Have you or a family member experienced basement flooding in the last five years?

3.Do you drink tap water?

4.Do you drink bottled water?

5.Do you use a water filter in your home?

6.Do you water your lawn?

7.Do you consider yourself an environmentalist?

8.This is a list of chemicals in our wastewater. Rate each chemical on a scale from 1 to 5,
          with 1 = not concerned, 3 = somewhat concerned, and 5 = very concerned

A.Pharmaceuticals

B.Pesticides

C.Excess nitrates from overuse of fertilizers

D.Industrial wastes

E.Heavy metals

9.Currently our sewage and household as well as industrial waste water mingles with and contaminates rain water from roofs, parking lots, and roadways in a combined sewer system.  During heavy rains, the amount of water can exceed the capacity of the system and overflow into lakes and rivers, or back up into basements. This also results in the waste of a precious finite resource – fresh water - which should be going into our rivers, lakes and aquifers. Here are some ways that have been proposed to reduce flooding.

Check which of the following options you think should be done:

A.Plumbing systems that direct water from showers, sinks, and laundry into toilets and gardens

B. Low-flow toilets in all homes, institutions and businesses

C.Composting toilets

D.Redirecting building gutters and downspouts to empty directly onto the ground or into containers such as rain barrels for washing cars and watering gardens

E.Encouraging public and private construction of rain gardens and native plantings as well as trees and food gardens.

F.Re-reversing the Chicago River to flow directly into the lake

G.Constructing a wetland district to replace the Sanitary Canal that will compost, clean and safely restore organic materials and water to the natural environment. It will also restore plant and animal habitat and provide public open space as it prevents the flow of sewage into the Mississippi river and the Gulf of Mexico.

H.Provide free collection of toxic materials such as pharmaceuticals disposed of by individuals and hospitals.

I.        Reduce or eliminate the use of pesticides and herbicides as the city of Toronto, Canada has done.

J.Establish a more effective oversight of industrial facilities to insure that they are not disposing of toxic materials in county sewers.

K.Require that all concrete and asphalt surfaces in the county be constructed of permeable pavers or materials that allow the rain to soak back into the ground rather than flow into the sewers .
